Region Champions and Playoffs 2010

We have a 3 way tie for the Region Championship with us, Logan and Mountain Crest. There was a coin flip for placement in the state playoffs and Logan is 3rd, we are 2nd and Mt Crest is 1st. We play Highland the #2 team in Region 6, they had a 3 way tie for 2nd in that region.

The game is at 4pm at Highland High School (2166 South 1700 East Salt Lake City) It is just east of Sugar House Park.

There is no JV or Soph game this week. Their season is completed. Thank you for your efforts, now we need you to turn your focus to helping the Varsity.

Coach G: Thank you for the support. It was a great turnout at Highland for the game. We played well enough to win for 3 quarters but in the second quarter made too many mistakes. We have beat teams all year because we didn't turn it over and made them make the mistakes but not this time. I couldn't be prouder of our team for the way we kept competing and fought back. Our theme this week was total effort and it was there from start to finish. Effort is what brought this team from the bottom to the top.

Ogden Week

Our last regular season game is at home Thursday against Ogden for the region championship. The JV/Sophs play at Ogden on Wed at 4pm.

This week we also have parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday but because of the JV/Soph game on Wednesday the coaches will only be available for parent teacher conferences on Tuesday or if you would like to set up another time. Wednesday is an early out day also and we will practice at 1:15pm
Coach G: A great approach was taken to this game, very focused and professional. Our focus of the week was overcoming adversity and even though there didn't appear to much of that during the game as a team, each player has struggles and difficulties that he must overcome and I appreciate and respect each player for that desire, attitude and effort to be an overcomer.
My thoughts on Senior Night. At our banquet at the end of each football season we pay tribute to our seniors. I expect our seniors, and all players for that matter, to play each game like it is there last. I do appreciate the parents of our senior players who have put in so much time and effort over the years for their boys to have this wonderful experience. Thank you for having such great young men, it makes what I do a joy, not a job.

Morgan and Midweek Football

This week the Varsity, JV and Freshmen play against Morgan and because this is Fall Break week the games are earlier in the week.

Games, JV 4pm on Tuesday at Home, Freshmen 4pm Tuesday at Morgan.

Sophomore game Tuesday v Ben Lomond has been cancelled by Ben Lomond. Sophomores will play with the JV v Morgan at home on Tuesday.

Coach G: A slow start and turnovers hurt us badly against Morgan. A very impressive rally gave us a chance at the end. The heart of our team was evident in this game. To be great we cannot overlook anyone and must compete at the highest level possible from start to finish against every opponent. We must be the best at blocking, tackling and controlling the football.

Logan

We play the Logan Grizzlies this week. On Thursday the JV and Sophomores are at Logan at 3:30 and 5:30. On Wednesday the Freshmen are at Logan at 4pm. On Friday the Varsity plays at home at 7pm.

Also, It is almost midterm. It is very important that our players are taking care of their grades. If they are having problems please feel free to contact a coach for more help.

Our theme this week is Attitude, take a look at the attitude link above for a great quote.

Coach G: What a great finish! Defense played sound the entire game. Many things happened against us all game long but we competed for everything and kept a positive attitude. We made mistakes but stayed together and kept working to be successful. Keep up the great work.

Bonneville

This week we play Bonneville. JV 3:30 and Soph 5:30 are on Thursday here and Varsity plays Friday at Bonneville.

The Freshmen play Wednesday at Pleasant Grove at 6:30 pm.

Coach G: Great team effort. The synergy was evident through special teams to offense to the defense, who played an outstanding overall game. None of the Friday night success is possible without the Mon-Thursday effort of the "warriors", those who practice as hard as they can and may not see action on Friday. Keep up the great work.

September 19, 2010

Mountain Crest

This week the varsity travels to Mt Crest on Friday at 7pm. The JV and Sophs play at home on Thursday at 3:30 and 5:30 respectively. The Freshmen play on Wed at 4pm at home.

Note to parents: Thank you very much to those who have been helping with the concessions stand on game nights. It has been a success. Again a special thanks to Rob and Tricia for going above and beyond to set up and do all that you do.
Coach G: Big games hinge on 3-5 plays and we didn't get any of them. The defense played well but without the offense playing well it makes it very difficult to win the games against teams who are equal or better than we are. There is a process to being great and we must keep focused on the process. It includes great practice, great students, great preparation, then "play with your hair on fire" on Friday night.

Sky View and Region Begins

All teams play Sky View this week as Region 5 competition begins. On Wednesday the Freshmen will play at 5:30 at Sky View. On Thursday the JV will play at 3:30pm and the Sophs will play right after (around 5:30pm) both games at Sky View. On Friday the Varsity will play here at 7pm for our Homecoming game.

Our theme this week is Hold the Rope.

Coach G: It was a great homecoming game. We held the rope! It is still important to remember process over product. The win was great but how we went about it is what is important. Players were focused on winning one play at a time. Teamwork, our 11 against their 11 on every play.

September 7, 2010

Spanish Fork

This week we play Spanish Fork with JV and Varsity. The Freshmen play Stansbury here on Wed. Spanish Fork doesn't have enough to field 2 teams so they only play one game on Thursday. It is at Spanish Fork. Bus will leave a little before 1 on Thursday and return around 8pm. Players will need to bring some money to eat after the game. The game starts at 3:30pm. The Varsity game is a home game at 7pm on Friday.

Coach G: We got off to a great start with a KO return for a TD. There was great energy from start to finish. Our theme was a Band of Brothers from Henry V. We made plenty of mistakes but players competed well for each other to cover up mistakes and redeem mistakes. It was a fine team effort. The Hogs did a nice job of winning the line of scrimmage. Keep working hard because now the games count towards making the playoffs. Keep working to become a "Band of Brothers!

Purple and White

Friday Aug 13 is the annual Purple and White game. It begins at 6pm with the Freshmen v. Sophomore scrimmage. At 7pm the Varsity will play a modified game. The teams will be drafted by the coaches and will be even on paper. It is our game preparation for the first game 1 week from Friday at home v. Weber.

There will also be food available for the spectators. The players will be served a dinner after they play. So the Sophomores and Freshmen will eat while the varsity is playing.
The burgers and drinks will be provided for the players but we are asking for potluck for the rest of dinner.
Food Assignments
Freshmen and Juniors bring desserts
Sophomores and Seniors bring a salad
If you have questions about the food assignments and/or are willing to help with the barbeque please call 723-2461 or email kingtricia@yahoo.com
Coach G: Thank you for the great parental support of the barbeque. Thanks to Tricia and Rob for spending all day getting set up and all the parents who worked with them to make it a success. Football, it was a great showing of team football. It is important to understand that we have no stars but everyone giving total effort to do their job will make the team the star. To steal from Rudyard Kipling, "the strength of the bee is in the hive, the strength of the hive is the bee."

Hydration

Parents and players,
It is imperative that the players stay hydrated. The most important time to hydrate is before the activity. I have suggested that they drink one oz of water for every one lb of body weight. ie.. Gary weighs 179lbs, he needs 179 oz of water every day to compete at optimal performance. These young men are working as hard as they can and trying to earn a starting position, they need to be completely hydrated to function at their best. If they are underhydrated they do not function at full capacity and if they are dehydrated there are serious health risks.

Team Camp

Thanks for a great camp! Each year our goal for camp as coaches is to put in our basic defense and offense and stay healthy. We started by putting everything in without pads on Monday, even tackling, and finished with a competition day on Friday of Punt, Pass, Kick and push the truck. We also, had a successful scrimmage against Roy on Thursday. Now it is important that we condition ourselves so that we can physically dominate a complete football game. Keep working hard!

Northern Ice Breaker 7on7 at Bear River High

Thursday June 3 at Bear River High at 3:00pm
We will have a Varsity and a JV team, each team will play 5 games. Each game is 30 minutes running time.

Coach G: It was great to be back on the Football Field competing!! There were many great things at the 7on7 tournament, especially players working together and the energy level in the last 2 games. Of course there are some things to work on but with the attitude and effort that was shown, we will overcome any lack of technique or assignment by working through it and learning from it. Nice job!

Respect and Hard Work were the 2 main goals from day 1 and the players lived up to that. Now it is important to get in the weight room and build your strength and speed so that you can become and even better player, which makes us an even better team.
